How to Use Thunderbird Imap to Synchronize With Gmail

Thunderbird 3 is a free email client. It is fast, small and synchronizes very well with Gmail using the Easy-Email solution.

This article explains how to set up a Thunderbird Imap catalogue so you can synchronize with Gmail, and in doing so carry on all your email from one window, either webmail addresses or email addresses with a mailbox. For the purposes of this article we assume that your existing catalogue in Thunderbird is a Pop account.

Imap Email

Thunderbird 3 works on Windows, Mac Os and Linux and is translated into many separate languages.
Note! The names of some menus vary on separate operating systems:

• In Windows the menus are tools catalogue settings and tools options
• In Linux they are Edit catalogue settings and edit preferences
• In Mac they are Tools catalogue settings and Thunderbird preferences.

In this article I'll refer to the Windows menus but refer to the menus above if you are using Linux or Mac.
This assumes that you have already set up a Gmail catalogue to pick up mail from your mailbox and enabled Imap.

Important! Backup your emails before you start! This is proper convention but you'd be surprised how many habitancy skip this prominent step when doing anyone with their email accounts.

1. Modify existing Pop accounts in Thunderbird to leave new emails in the mailbox for long enough for Gmail to pick up a copy too.

Note! These changes do not influence the way you currently carry on your email. It means you will have a Pop catalogue downloading your email and an Imap catalogue synchronizing with Gmail so you will have two copies of your email active until you choose to switch off one account.

Gmail automatically checks your mailboxes for new mail once every hour. If a new email arrives in your mailbox and Thunderbird 3 downloads and removes the email from the mailbox before Gmail gets to it you will not see that email in Gmail and it will not be synchronized with your other email clients.
• Go to Tools → catalogue Settings...
• Select your existing email account.
Click Server Settings.
Check Leave messages on server.
Change the whole of days to 1 (or more).
Click Ok.

2. Create a new Imap catalogue in Thunderbird 3 to way Gmail
Gmail has already been setup to pick up your email for you. This step tells Thunderbird 3 to synchronize with Gmail so you can download copies of your emails.
• In Thunderbird click Tools → catalogue Settings...
• Then click catalogue Actions → Add Mail Account...
• Enter your name and gmail address (the gmail address you wish to use for synchronization) and the gmail password
• Check Remember Password
Click Continue.

• Thunderbird 3 automatically finds the accurate settings for your email account.
Click Create Account.

3. Repeat step 2 on any other computers and your email will be synchronized on them all.
Your folders and email are now synchronized with Gmail. Here's how this will influence your email life on a day to day basis:

Your email is synchronized on Gmail and Thunderbird so you can use any of your own computers to way your email, or any other computer!
Send an email from your desktop and it's in the sent mail folder in Gmail; read an email in Gmail and it's marked as read on your laptop. Everything you do on one computer will be reflected on your other computers.

Note: We showed how to set up the Thunderbird Imap catalogue alongside your old Pop catalogue so you can verify that all emails are advent straight through into the Imap catalogue by comparing the emails in the two accounts. Once you are comfortable that it has all worked you can switch off the Pop account.

There are a few other settings that need to be changed to make this work seamlessly. For example you can
• Tell Thunderbird's spam filter to work with Gmail (Gmail has a great spam filter)
• Change your imap catalogue name to make it easier to work with
• Set up Smart folders
• Make some industrialized configuration changes to the Thunderbird settings
